What a crown does
A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It protects a tooth that is cracked, weakened by a large filling, or treated with a root canal, and restores its shape, strength and appearance.
A bridge replaces a missing tooth: a false tooth is held in place by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Crowns and bridges are fixed in place and are not removed.

Bridges for missing teeth
A bridge fills a gap of one or more missing teeth. The teeth on each side of the gap are shaped and crowned, and the false tooth is attached between them. Bridges are fixed in place and usually take two visits. If the teeth next to the gap are not strong enough, your dentist may suggest a partial denture instead.
Your visit, step by step

Check-up and X-ray of the tooth.
- 2.
The tooth is numbed with a local anaesthetic, any decay is removed and the tooth is shaped.
- 3.
An impression or scan is taken, and the shade is matched to your teeth.
- 4.
A temporary crown protects the tooth while your crown is made.
- 5.
At a second visit, once your crown is ready, it is fitted, your bite is checked and it is cemented in place.
After your visit
- With a temporary crown, avoid sticky and very hard food and chew on the other side.
- Some sensitivity for a few days is normal.
- Brush and floss around the crown every day, as with your other teeth.
- Call us if the crown feels high when you bite, or if a temporary crown comes off.
