Why wisdom teeth cause problems
Wisdom teeth are the last molars at the back of the mouth, and they usually come through between the ages of 17 and 25. Often there is not enough room for them, so they come through only partly, grow at an angle or stay trapped in the jaw (impacted).
Partly erupted wisdom teeth are hard to clean, and the gum over them can become swollen and infected. Before recommending removal, your dentist takes an X-ray to see the position of the tooth and its roots.

Is this right for you?
- Pain or swelling at the back of your mouth
- A swollen, sore gum over a wisdom tooth that keeps coming back
- Food gets trapped behind your back teeth
- Decay in the wisdom tooth or the tooth next to it
- Pain when you open your mouth wide or chew
- Your dentist or orthodontist has advised removal
Types of wisdom teeth
Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?
No. Wisdom teeth that have come through fully, are healthy and can be cleaned well can often stay. Your dentist checks them at your regular check-ups and recommends removal only if they cause problems or are likely to. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.
Your visit, step by step
- 1.
Your dentist examines the area and takes an X-ray.
- 2.
Your dentist explains whether removal is needed, how it will be done and the cost in writing.
- 3.
The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic.
- 4.
The tooth is removed. For an impacted tooth, a small cut is made in the gum and the tooth may be removed in pieces.
- 5.
Stitches are placed if needed, and you get written aftercare advice.
- 6.
A review visit, if your dentist recommends one.
After your visit
- Bite firmly on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Swelling is usually worst on day 2 or 3. Hold a cold compress on your cheek, 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off, on the first day.
- For 24 hours, do not rinse, spit forcefully, use a straw or smoke.
- Eat soft food and take pain relief as your dentist advises.
- From the next day, rinse gently with warm salty water after meals.
- Call us if bleeding does not stop, if pain gets worse after 2 to 3 days, or if you have a fever.
