What to do before you get here
- Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the white crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or water without scrubbing. Put it back in the socket if possible, without forcing it, or keep it in milk and seek urgent dental care immediately. Do not reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.
- Toothache: rinse with warm water and gently floss around the tooth to remove trapped food. Take an appropriate pain reliever as directed on the pack, if it is safe for you. Do not put aspirin on the gum.
- Swelling: hold a cold compress on the outside of your cheek, 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off.
- Broken tooth: keep any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress if it is swollen.
- Lost crown: keep the crown safe and bring it with you.
When to go to hospital instead
If you have rapidly spreading swelling, swelling spreading towards your eye or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a high fever with facial swelling, heavy bleeding that will not stop, or a jaw injury after an accident, call 998 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department straight away. Do not wait for a clinic appointment.
